India: NTPC to set up charging stations for electric vehicles

The National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) in India has forayed into the new business segment of setting up charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) and has installed first such points at its offices in Delhi and Noida. The state owned body has said that it is planning to set up many such charging stations across Delhi/NCR and other cities in near future.

NTPC-EV-Charging-t’wireThe Indian goverment has been taking steps to promote electric vehicles. It has been framing policies that aim to enable faster adoption of electric vehicles. The government has reiterated many times that it is committed to have 100% vehicles as electric vehicles by 2030.

GoI has come up with a plan FAME India – Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India, which is a part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan. It had set an ambitious target to achieve sales of 6-7 million hybrid and electric vehicles year-on-year from 2020 onwards.

But India lacks the infrastructure for the same so it is a good step considering this. The creation of infrastructure would also encourage the companies to boost their efforts in manufacturing electric vehicles. Apart from NTPC, PowerGrid is also a part of the mission to enhance India’s electric vehicle segment.
